Class Series Concept
Definition
Positions at this level of the series manage the operations of one or more production or service units within the Correctional Industries operations training program and supervise at least one Correctional Industries Supervisor 2.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Typical Work
Develops annual operating forecast; responsible for operating within established forecast; maintains control over assigned inventory; controls waste;
Operates and maintains all machinery and equipment required to meet production needs; trains incarcerated workers in the operation and maintenance of equipment;
Using proprietary software determines needed purchases of raw materials, equipment, and supplies;
Determines shop production schedule; schedules material, machinery, and workers to meet completion dates;
Recommends design and engineering improvements to product and service; implements process improvements to enhance operations;
Responsible for quality workmanship; adheres to quality standards;
Accounts for assigned incarcerated workers in accordance with security requirements; ensures plant operations meet Department security requirements; maintains tool control;
Develops and operates preventative maintenance program for equipment;
Hires incarcerated workers as necessary to ensure production schedule and service delivery is met in the units supervised; evaluates incarcerated workers performance;
Ensures incarcerated workers personnel actions and compensation are managed in accordance with Department directives; approves incarcerated workers payroll for units supervised;
Operates a safety accident prevention program in accordance with Department policy; ensures staff and incarcerated workers receive safety training and adhere to safe work practices;
Participates in product and development teams as assigned;
Works directly with customer as required to ensure that orders meet customer requirements; ensures continuing good customer relations;
Performs other duties as required.

Desirable Qualifications
High school graduation or GED and four years of experience in the production or service unit of a business or manufacturing operation.
College coursework may be substitute for the experience on a year for year basis.
