Definition
Conducts clinical diagnostic procedures and research activities in a clinical cytology laboratory; directs the work of cytology technologists and other assigned staff; and performs administrative procedures in support of the laboratory operation.

Provides work direction to cytology technologists, lab assistants, and other assigned staff.
Typical Work
Provide work direction to Cytology Technologist 1's, lab assistants and other assigned staff; instruct cytotechnology students in cytologic procedures and diagnoses;
Collect follow-up data of patients who have had cytologic exams; assimilate data and develop quality assurance reports;
Inform physicians immediately of the final report on all suspicious and positive gynecological and surgical cases;
Perform quality control stain checks and assessments.
Perform gynecological Pap quality control slide reviews.
Develop and test cytology procedures; adapt and implement procedures for the laboratory;
Prepare gynecologic and non-gynecologic specimens using current technologies.
Rapid on-site immediate assessment for fine needle aspirations and core needle biopsies, using telecytology when indicated.
Perform the work of Cytology Technologist 1;
Perform related duties as required.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.
Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.
Desirable Qualifications
A Bachelor of Science Degree
Graduation from an Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) accredited school of cytotechnology or other organization approved by Health and Human Services (HHS)
AND
American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Registry (BOR)certification as a Cytotechnologist (CT) or Specialist in Cytotechnology (SCT).
At least 3 years full-time experience as a cytotechnologist within the preceding 10 years.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
