Definition

Leads assigned personnel and performs laboratory procedures such as flow cytometry, renal biopsy, electron microscopy, autopsy, molecular pathology, surgical pathology, neuropathology, and immunocytochemistry.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Under general supervision, regularly assigns, instructs, and checks the work of others laboratory personnel.  Independently performs laboratory work as a senior-level anatomic pathology technologist.  Coordinates the development and evaluation of new laboratory tests and procedures and ensures a safe work environment by assisting management in the development and maintenance of policies and procedures.  Exercises independent judgment in interpreting, selecting, and recommending alternative courses of action in day-to-day tasks of a laboratory work group or unit.

Typical Work

Assigns work, monitors workflows, and checks the work of other technicians/technologists in the work unit;  

Coordinates development and evaluation of new laboratory tests and procedures;   

Ensures quality control standards are met and documented as well as troubleshooting methods and instrumentation;  

Develops and evaluates new methodologies; writes, reviews, and revises technical procedures;

Consults with supervisor, manager, or administrator and faculty director in matters relating to purchasing, budgeting, and cost analysis; informs faculty of unusual technical problems and helps establish laboratory policies as well as monitoring budget status;

Reviews intra-laboratory process errors and shares opportunities for process improvement with the supervisor and/or manager; instructs staff of how perform process correctly;

Trains employees in new techniques;

Develops and maintains policies and procedures to ensure an effective and safe work environment;

Provides input to the supervisor/manager in the interviewing, hiring, and evaluation of new employees;

Provides input to the supervisor/manager regarding performance assessment of other staff personnel;

May counsel section or division staff and recommend disciplinary action to the supervisor when necessary;

Performs the duties of the Anatomic Pathology Technologist and Technician job classes;

Performs related duties as required.

Legal Requirement(s)

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position. 

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Desirable Qualifications

A Bachelor’s Degree with coursework in chemistry, biology, and other biological sciences including microscopy

AND

Certification at the Technologist level by a nationally recognized certifying agency such as the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, the American Society of Clinical Laboratory Scientists or the Microscopy Society of America

AND

Two years of clinical anatomic laboratory experience

OR

Equivalent education/experience.
