LIBRARY & ARCHIVAL PROF 1 - TEAMSTERS
Class Series Concept
Positions in this series perform professional level librarian and/or archivist duties in the delivery of services offered by state agencies or Higher Ed institutions. Conduct informational searches; create/update instructional and training resources; assist customers in locating information perform records appraisals to determine historical, financial and or legal value, collection assessment, development, and preservation, activities; conduct research projects; and catalog and index collections. Positions plan and implement strategic initiatives and provide analysis, design, development and/or support.
Definition
Performs entry-level professional librarian and/or archivist duties. Positions perform basic functions.
Distinguishing Characteristics
This is the entry level of the series. Positions at this level work under close supervision. Assignments are structured to encourage the development of professional judgment and learn the full range and scope of library and/or archival management functions conducted by the employing agency.
Typical Work
Analyzes and resolves order and bibliographic problems;
Locates, revises, updates and/or creates catalog records for review in local, regional, national or international databases using specific knowledge of appropriate cataloging rules and local practices;
Analyzes and processes incoming material by performing arrangement and description;
Provides research services and resolves research inquiries; consults finding aids and interprets them for researchers; monitors researchers to assure adherence to collections use and security procedures; guides researchers to other sources for records, publications, and information;
Identifies binding styles, grain direction, methods of leaf attachment, and techniques of hand sewing signatures and pamphlets as part of the library’s conservation activities;
Assists in appraisal and weeding projects;
Under the guidance of a higher professional level, creates and implements projects to increase digital access to materials.

Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: fundamental knowledge and practice applications of professional level library and/or archival principles. Knowledge of cataloging and reference techniques.
Ability to: use and explain information, resources and services; meet public and establish effective relationships; interact courteously with customers; work effectively in a team environment.

Legal Requirement(s)
Some librarian positions at the 1 level and all other librarian positions must meet the provisions of Chapter 300-12 WAC Certification of Librarians and RCW 27.04.055 Qualifications of Librarians-Rules-Fees.

Desirable Qualifications
Positions require a Master’s degree in library science from an American Library Association accredited program and certification by the State Librarian authorized through the Office of the Secretary of State; or certification by professional portfolio as authorized through the Office of the Secretary of State,
A Master’s degree involving archives and records management, history or related field.
Experience in the functional operations of a library or archives may substitute on a year for year basis for education.
