Definition

Under close supervision of staff, renders first aid and subsequent treatment to injured or ill individuals in a variety of settings, such as sports programs/events, social activities, performing arts, or graduation/commencement activities and events.

Typical Work

Administers prescribed medication and first aid; handles and responds to medical emergencies as they arise;

Sterilizes, disinfects, anoints, and bandages minor cuts, burns, wounds, and stops bleeding;

Applies artificial respiration or administers oxygen, in cases of suffocation and asphyxiation for both adults and children;

Assesses patients, performing some or all of the following: complete body exam to determine level of alertness, skin conditions, blood, broken bones, etc.; vital signs, to include blood pressure, pulse, respirations, temperature; oxygen saturations; pain assessment; airway management; treat for shock; hyperthermia; hypothermia; mental status; pupil dilation assessment; impairment of limb movement and stabilization; treatment for anaphylaxis; plus treatment and care for other conditions which require first aid;

Contacts Paramedics for further care of the patient when necessary;

Provides report of incident and care given to the patient to Paramedics; logs incidents in records and/or into computer;

Stocks first aid supplies and cleans equipment;

May be necessary to backboard patients and maintain stabilization of the head;

May be necessary to assist with the transport of injured victims to the proper location for extended care;

Performs other duties as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: emergency procedures for medical and evacuation purposes; general safety precautions; first aid; verbal communication skills; observation skills.

Ability to: interpret safety rules and policies; establish and maintain a safe and healthy working environment; meet emergencies and employ effective courses of action; apply first aid; write reports; maintain effective working relationships; analyze and resolve a variety of first aid issues; stand, sit, walk and climb stairs, often for long periods of time; follow written and oral instructions; prioritize and manage multiple tasks and responsibilities simultaneously; ability to lift 10 pounds unaided; maintain composure and professionalism; speak and write clearly.

Legal Requirement(s)

Position requires current First Aid/CPR certification.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Desirable Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent.

Note: As a condition of employment, the incumbent must be able to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
