CLINICAL/MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST 1
Definition
This is a first-level, professional position. Performs routine manual and automated clinical diagnostic tests in a clinical or medical laboratory.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Under general supervision, performs routine diagnostic laboratory tests such as complete blood cell count, serum electrolyte analysis, and micro-organism identification and sensitivity testing.
Typical Work
Performs clinical diagnostic laboratory tests; records, evaluates and interprets test results; contacts appropriate personnel for tests with unusual or critical findings;
Calibrates, operates, troubleshoots and performs routine and emergency preventive maintenance to laboratory instruments and related equipment. The following is a partial list of instruments commonly utilized by personnel in this class:
• bacterial ID & susceptibility electrophoretic apparatus
• testing instruments gamma & beta counters
• blood culturing instruments gas chromatographs
• blood gas analyzers high performance liquid chromatographs
• densitometers light, phase & flourescence microscopes
• discrete chemistry analyzers single & double-beam spectrophotometers
• electronic cell counters transcutaneous monitoring instruments;
Assures that quality control requirements are met to validate test results; records data for continual quality assurance program;
Utilizes institution-based computer system for test result entry and data acquisition;
Applies transcutaneous monitors to patient and evaluate readings at bedside or during surgery;
Collects specimens; may assist and instruct patients and medical staff in proper specimen collection techniques; may assist physicians in obtaining bone marrow specimens and preparing specimens for evaluation;
Assists in instruction and training of new employees, post-doctoral fellows, residents, medical students and medical technology students;
Assists in the development and evaluation of new procedures;
Prepares and verifies the quality of reagents, standards, and control samples;
Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: laboratory principles, practices and techniques involving bacteriology, semiology, hematology, parasitology, histology, urinalysis, clinical microscopy, immunology, organic and biochemistry, clinical and pathological laboratory tests; laboratory equipment, supplies and reagents; report preparation.
Ability to: use laboratory equipment and techniques; sharpen and polish microtome knives; understand and follow complex written and oral directions, formulae and charts; prepare clear and concise reports; maintain cooperative working relations with others; distinguish colors; perform work with a microscope for extended periods of time; supervise professional and technical laboratory personnel.

Desirable Qualifications
A Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology with a curriculum accredited by the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation of the American Medical Association AND certification or eligibility to take examination, with successful completion and certification within one year from date of hire, for certification with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists or equivalent, or certification with specialty organization appropriate to the laboratory division
