Performs skilled oxyacetylene, arc, and other types of welding and burning work.
Typical Work
Lays out work for many types of welding jobs, working from verbal requests, rough sketches, plans, or blueprints;
Sets up and welds such items as piping manifolds, metal Stairways, machinery guards, brackets, braces, and heavy construction equipment;
Verifies that necessary welding permits have been obtained;
Welds and makes minor repairs on farm machinery, hand tools, hospital beds, laundry and cooking equipment, automobiles, and other metal equipment;
Cuts pipe, plate, and equipment when necessary;
Operates variety of machine shop equipment such as hand or electric pipe threaders, grinding wheels, buffers, and drill presses;
Supervises and instructs other welders, helpers, patients, or inmates;
Performs other work as required.

Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: characteristics of ferrous and non ferrous metals under welding conditions; principles and operation of oxyacetylene and arc welding equipment; fluxes and hardening agents; fundamentals of heat treatment; standards for welding high pressure boilers, steam lines, and other potentially hazardous equipment; basic computer skills.
Ability to: read and work from blueprints, plans, and sketches; use oxyacetylene and arc equipment in all welding positions; estimate materials and time needed to complete jobs.

Desirable Qualifications
Completion of recognized welder apprenticeship or course at welder's training school or four years of experience in welding trade.
Some positions require a valid motor vehicle driver’s license.
NOTE: In some positions, ability to pass A.S.M.E. Welding Certification Test or Coast
Guard Welder's Certification Test for Marine Welding is required.
