Definition
Performs professional architectural work in creation of plans and designs for minor buildings or in the administration of financing for hospitals or schools.
Typical Work
Prepares final and working drawings for major buildings, alteration work, and special equipment; prepares scale and full-sized details of ornamental work, cabinet work, millwork, iron work, sheet metal, special hardware, classic and ornamental lettering, and terra cotta; prepares specifications for contracts; checks shop drawings, change-orders, and other work accomplished by architects, engineers, contractors, and sub-contractors; compiles bills of materials, including requisition drawings;
Makes architectural and minor engineering computations; secures information from prospective building occupants and field engineering surveys for preparation of sketches for new construction and alterations or additions to existing buildings;
Assumes charge of all architectural aspects of work done by engineering departments in operating agency, but not in major architectural division; submits sketches and finished working drawings of buildings to structural, electrical, and mechanical engineers for review and computation of statics, stresses, and other engineering considerations;
Reviews, analyzes, and recommends for approval construction plans and specifications for school, hospitals, infirmaries, health centers, nursing homes, and related types of facilities to ensure compliance with minimum standards and rules established by federal government and state and local laws and ordinances for operating licenses and architectural standards, confers with architects, school boards, hospital boards and other agencies concerning corrections necessary to qualify for financing; advises prospective occupants of buildings as to technical aspects, including costs and construction schedules;
Reviews and recommends appropriate actions to higher authority on contract modifications;
Inspects buildings during construction and following completion;
Prepares and helps to maintain actual construction costs for future estimating;
Performs other work as required.

Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: theory, principles, and practices of architectural design; architectural drafting procedures and equipment; making building plans, elevations, sections, and perspectives; lumber, concrete, hardware, and other building materials; architectural and engineering mathematics; fire and building codes and related court decisions.
Ability to: sketch, render, and draft plans for buildings and other structures; use architectural standards, engineering handbooks, and materials catalogs; understand and interpret needs of building users; understand and utilize relationships between building occupancy, aesthetics, orientation to view and sun, and other buildings; inspect buildings in plan stage, under construction, and after completion for discrepancies between plans and requirements and for defects of safety or usage, and take effective correction courses of action.

Desirable Qualifications
A Bachelor's degree involving major study in architecture or architectural engineering
AND
One year of professional experience as practicing architect or as structural plans examiner.
Note: Additional experience in office of licensed or registered architect or registered professional engineer or as architectural or structural plans examiner in metropolitan building permits department may be substituted, year for year, for education.
