Definition

Perform semi-skilled plumbing, pipefitting, and/or steamfitting work of graduated complexity in the institution's building, maintenance and alterations program in an on-the-job apprentice program.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Positions in this class are distinguished by assignment as an apprentice trainee for the Plumber/Pipefitter/Steamfitter Apprentice job class receiving on-the-job and academic training to achieve journey status.

Typical Work

Plumber

Under guidance of a journey-worker, perform various plumber maintenance and alteration duties;  

Installs, maintains and repairs pipes, storm sewers, septic tanks, sewage mains and laterals, valves, drains, basins, tubs, faucets, lavatories, sinks, gates, hydrants, water coolers, and dishwashers; 

Complete on-the-job plumber trades training program requirements;

Complete related academic training which will consist of designated trades school and/or correspondence courses as available and applicable to the plumber journey class;

Perform related duties and functions as specified in approved apprentice training program.

Pipefitter/Steamfitter

Under guidance of a journey-worker, perform various pipefitter maintenance and alteration duties;  

Install and repair high & low pressure steam piping systems and boilers; 

Repair hot water piping for comfort heating systems and boilers; 

Install and repair commercial/industrial process piping (chilled water, condenser water, compressed air, etc.) including fiber optics for instrumentation & control; 

Repair natural gas, high purity and oil burner piping.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position. 

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Desirable Qualifications

High school graduation or equivalent; AND meet qualification standards approved by Washington State Apprenticeship Council. Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license may be required.
