In a learning capacity, assess patient status and design and modify prosthetics and orthotics devices based on patient requirements.

Under direct supervision, as part of a residency program, incumbents learn the skills necessary to assess patient needs, and design and modify prosthetic and orthotic devices. Staff learn the common methods, practices and materials used to fabricate orthoses, prostheses, and adaptive equipment.

Assesses patient needs applies knowledge of anatomy and kinesiology; synthesize and reporting assessments verbally and in writing;   

Designs and modifies prosthetic and orthotic devices to meet patient requirements;  

Performs fitting and fabrication techniques of prosthetic and orthotic devices;  

Provides patient and family education in the use and maintenance of prosthetic and orthotic devices;  

Works collaboratively with support staff to monitor Work in Progress (WIP) reports and ensures all projects are on track; 

Directs the work of students and volunteers;  

Provides in-service presentations to staff and students;  

Maintains inventory and orders materials;  

Assists with development and implementation of clinical programs; participates in interdisciplinary planning;   

Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge of:  common methods, practices and materials used in fabrication of orthoses, prostheses, and adaptive equipment; use and care of hand and power tools.  

Ability to:  interpret drawings and specifications; perform ordinary arithmetic; comprehend forms in space and understand relationships of plane and solid objects; work within precise tolerances; use hand and power tools with skill; work safely.

Graduation from an accredited Orthotic/Prosthetic Practitioner program 

OR 

Equivalent education/experience.
