Definition

In a high volume, large format (over 22”) print shop, at the fully qualified journey level, sets up, operates and maintains a color digital press capable of supporting a variety of substrate types, sizes, weights, and thicknesses for application flexibility and variable data print solutions. Positions utilize hardware and software (computer interface) to enhance image quality and set up jobs comparable to offset printing not produced by high speed copiers or office equipment.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Positions are found in a high volume, large format print shop characterized by specialized, high speed offset and digital equipment capable of producing large format (over 22” for offset and 14”x20” for digital) print jobs.

Positions are distinguished from the Digital Printing Operator by the focus on press operation, the complexity and diversity of jobs being produced, the complexity of the operation and maintenance of the equipment, and the format size of the equipment of 14”x20”.

Typical Work

Receives documents in a variety of digital formats as well as hard copy;

Reviews documents for integrity;

Downloads files to press and organize files and print documents;

Interprets job tickets and facilitates quality printing;

Prepares and programs the digital press for production runs;

Makes adjustments to equipment to ensure quality and color match to digital proofs;

Performs daily and routine service on digital press;

Monitors inventory level of supplies;

Performs other duties as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: digital press operations including materials, methods, and the equipment used.

Ability to: interpret and follow oral and written instructions; meet deadlines and production requirements; perform all press activities quickly and accurately; maintain responsibility for a variety of press procedures with regular direction.

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Desirable Qualifications

High school graduation or equivalent 

                                                                AND, either

Three years of experience in press operation in a commercial print shop OR one year of experience operating a digital color press.
