Definition

As a senior level specialist, sets up, operates, maintains, and repairs complicated bindery equipment in a high volume, large format (over 22”) offset  print shop.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Positions at this level set up, operate, and maintain a variety of specialized bindery equipment and are responsible to resolve complicated issues relating to equipment operation and production including performing skilled repairs and maintenance of bindery equipment.  Positions in this class are found in a high volume, offset print shop characterized by specialized, high speed finishing equipment capable of complex finishing of large format (over 22”) print jobs.

Positions at this level, set up, operate, maintain, and repair equipment from the following list a majority of the time:

  • Folders larger than 18 inches
  • 40 inch and larger computer controlled cutting machines
  • 3 and 5 knife saddle stitch trimmers
  • Perforator/scoring machines
  • Videojet and Scitex labelers
  • Collator perfect binder
  • 8 pocket inserter
  • PHP die cutter
  • Single head and multiple head drilling machines
  • Multiple in-line operations such as collator-stitcher-trimmer
In addition, positions assist Bindery Specialists 1 & 2 with machine set up and provide trade specific guidance and training on its set up and operation.

Typical Work

Sets up, operates, and maintains a variety of bindery equipment;

Performs skilled repair and maintenance of bindery equipment.  Performs preventative maintenance on equipment as required;

Assists with machine set up for lower level operators;

Performs other duties as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:  materials, methods, and equipment used in bindery work and available product options.

Ability to:  interpret and follow oral and written instructions; operate the specific tools and equipment used in the area of expertise, including related tools and equipment; meet deadlines and production requirements and perform bindery activities quickly and accurately without regular direction.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position. 

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Desirable Qualifications

High school graduation or equivalent

                                                                                AND

Two years of experience as a Bindery Specialist or three years of bindery experience in a commercial print shop.
