Definition

Under general supervision of a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse, employees provide direct and indirect patient care and treatment. Positions will assist in the delivery of nursing and nursing related care to patients or residents and deliver aid in a home-like setting with a variety of activities of daily living, meal planning and preparation, leading therapeutic activities, completing housekeeping tasks, doing residents personal laundry, providing medical assistance, patient transportation and maintaining medical information in a computer-based tracking system.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Positions work under general supervision on a 24/7 basis in an in-home setting with a dining facility, living room, dining room, restroom and den shared by all residents. Nursing assistants provide and assist residents with nurse related care and therapeutic recreational activities which can include feeding assistance, leading residents in group activities, performing light housekeeping in resident rooms and assist in processing resident’s personal laundry. and belongings, assisting with personal care, transporting patients to group activities and medical appointments, taking vitals, monitoring resident activity and symptoms, and ensure handoff of care.

Typical Work

Actively participates in the resident’s care plan for the purpose of improving the life and maintaining the safety of each resident;

Assists residents or patients with personal care and activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, personal grooming, toileting, hygiene, dressing, positioning, transferring, taking of fluids, meals and nourishments, and ambulation; participates in creating a pleasant environment;

Assists the dietary department with planning weekly menus with/for each resident, following safety and health regulation guidelines, while ensuring meals and snacks are prepared and served within resident therapeutic/special needs diets;

Supports and encourages the resident’s involvement in decision making regarding their daily activities;

Assists with therapeutic treatment under the direction of a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse; performs basic nursing procedures such as applying anti-embolism stockings, applies barrier cream and lotions to intact skin; performs non-invasive lab procedures and reports results to a Registered Nurse; initiates CPR; assists in wound care;

Perform hygienic related functions for residents such as: bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, eating, assisting with monitoring/feeding of meals and nourishments;

Reposition residents; move or relocate up to 60 pounds and reaching a minimum of 36”, for resident repositioning or access to supplies;

Assists the dietary manager with planning weekly menus with/for each resident, following safety and health regulation guidelines, while ensuring meals and snacks are prepared and served within resident therapeutic/special needs diets;

Applies external appliances such as braces, urosheaths, hearing aids and performs both active and passive range of motion;

Accurately obtains and records vital signs which may include taking temperatures, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure and other resident data; documents residents’ intake and output records, encourages intake of liquids, collects specimens for laboratory use;

Actively participates in therapeutic planning activities and seeks opportunities throughout the day to provide spontaneous activities that meet the interests/requirements of the residents and the household;

Answers patient call lights; determines nature of problem; responds within scope and/or obtains appropriate resources;

Tracks location of patients (arrival and departure) and procedures performed or to be performed; relays information to patient care staff;

Supports and encourages the resident’s involvement in decision making regarding their daily activities;

Maintains clean and sanitary spaces in the household including residences rooms and common spaces;

Complies with all Department of Health regulatory sanitation requirements;

Takes universal precautions to prevent transmission of disease through contamination;

Stocks supplies and equipment; conducts equipment inventory; locates missing equipment; identifies and reports repair needs; helps with quality assurance on processors, monitors and other equipment; and

Performs clerical duties such as collection of data, ordering supplies, answering phones, recording messages or referring call to appropriate person/area, data entry, photocopying, folding, and completing forms;

Operates washing machines and dryers;
Receives, washes, dries, folds and returns resident’s personal laundry;

Enters medical information into computer tracking system and performs other duties as assigned;

Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: methods and practices of basic nursing and restorative care, personal hygiene and sanitation methods, record keeping, report preparation, infection control procedures, and residents rights.

Ability to: maintain confidentiality at all times, speak, read, write and follow written and oral directions in the English language; show flexibility, dependability, teamwork, and proficient communication skills move or relocate up to 60 lbs.

Legal Requirement(s)

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position. licenses or certifications may include:
Valid Washington State Nursing Assistant Certification.
Active status on Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act with no disqualifying findings or convictions.

NOTE: a Washington State license to practice as a “Nursing Assistant - Certified” may be required.



Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Desirable Qualifications

High school diploma or GED

AND

Six months of experience with geriatrics, healthcare services, food preparation and safety, household cleaning and/or laundry activities.
Valid Washington State Food Handler’s Permit.
