DENTAL CLINIC SUPERVISOR 1
Class Series Concept
Supervises staff and coordinates dental clinic patient care activities and related training/teaching programs.
Definition
Supervises dental assistants and other support staff providing patient services and participating in teaching activities in a clinic. Develop clinic procedures and/or assists in the development of school-wide dental clinic programs and procedures.
Distinguishing Characteristics
With delegated authority, interviews and recommends selection of applicants, conducts training, assigns and schedules work, acts upon leave requests, conducts annual performance evaluations and recommends disciplinary action. Under general direction, coordinates dental clinic activities, including implementing clinic procedures, establishing work schedules, maintaining records and inventory and assisting in the development of dental clinic programs and procedures. Supervises employees who perform patient service activities and assists in teaching/training programs.
Typical Work
Supervises technical and support staff in a dental specialty or service clinic;
Prepares and coordinates clinic schedules of dental assistants, support staff and dental students;
Assists in planning, implementing and interpreting policies and procedures related to program or service areas, reviews practices and policy statements and suggests changes to senior administrative staff/faculty;
Prepares/reviews requests for equipment, supplies and services for assigned area; maintains inventory records;
Develops clinic procedures and updates reference manual;
Coordinates student activity in clinic area with respect to patient records, clinic requirements, schedules changes and block assignments;
Gathers data and compiles statistics to assist in the preparation of budgets;
Participates in management conferences;
Assists in the development of programs/procedures impacting several clinics;
Performs chairside dental assistant duties as required;
Performs related duties as required.

Desirable Qualifications
Four years of experience as a dental assistant in a general practice setting or dental school clinic, or equivalent. Completion of an accredited dental assistant training program AND current certification as a dental assistant (CDA) or the ability to obtain same within six months.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
