Definition

Supervises dental assistants and other support staff providing patient services and participating in teaching activities in two or more dental clinics.  Develops and implements school-wide dental clinic programs and procedures.

Distinguishing Characteristics

With delegated authority, interviews and recommends selection of applicants, conducts training, assigns and schedules work, acts upon leave requests, conducts annual performance evaluations and recommends disciplinary action.  Under general direction, coordinates and supervises activities in dental clinics and in addition develops, implements and coordinates school-wide programs and activities impacting several clinics in areas such as in-service education, volunteer programs, standardization of clinic procedures, trainee programs and dental assistant clinic assignment.  Positions at this level typically have primary responsibility for at least two such program functions.

Typical Work

Develops, coordinates and evaluates the effectiveness of dental clinic volunteer and trainee programs; 

Develops and implements ongoing in-service training programs; 

Coordinates interdepartmental clinical activities and confers with individuals, groups and agencies outside of the institution on matters related to patient care; 

Assists in the development and presentation of didactic material; 

Evaluates requests for equipment, supplies and medication; makes purchase recommendations; 

Orients clinic staff and students in use of equipment such as cavitrons, X-ray machines and/or biofeedback equipment; 

Coordinates staff functions related to dental clinic activities such as dispensary, X-ray, and/or sterilization; 

Develops and coordinates the implementation of standardized procedures for use in one or more clinics; 

Determines staff assignments based upon evaluation of needs in several clinic areas; 

Prepares and administers clinic support budgets; prepares cost estimates, fiscal projections and reports; 

May perform the duties of a Dental Clinic Supervisor; 

Performs related duties as required.

Legal Requirement(s)

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position. 

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Desirable Qualifications

Five years of experience as a dental assistant or supervisor in a general practice or dental school clinic, or equivalent, to include at least one year of experience supervising dental assistants.  Completion of an accredited dental assistant training program

AND 

Current certification as a dental assistant (CDA) or the ability to obtain same within six months. 

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
