Typical Work
Incumbents typically perform the level of work described below a majority of the time. This description is not intended to be all inclusive but representative of the level of responsibility and level of difficulty of the work performed by this class.
Under direct supervision, receives on-the-job training and performs beginning level engineering tasks. Typical assignments would include or be equivalent to the following examples:
Serves as a survey party member; operates level, chain, rods and prism poles; holds and sets targets and backsights; marks and sets stakes, hubs and laths; compiles notes manually or with data collector, reduces information into usable data using personal computer; assists in plotting cross sections, contours, profiles and grade elevations; assists in the computation of field notes and miscellaneous calculations;
Assists in preparation of design reports; assembles traffic data; assists in preparing access reports, environmental documents and special studies; researches and writes portions of design reports;
Participates in various traffic studies such as speed studies, traffic counts, measurement of sight distances, hazard identification and accident analysis; assists in compiling data, drawing supporting sketches and preparing reports;
Assists in the preparation of plans, specifications, and estimates; traces, drafts and/or revises plans, maps, profiles, etc.; reduces field notes; computes and plots cross sections, alignment, roadway sections; uses calculator and/or computer to calculate cuts, fills, areas, quantities, elevations, etc.; compiles data and prepares various materials such as charts, graphs, diagrams and exhibits; reproduces prints;
Serves as an assistant field inspector who collects materials samples; learns to proficiently perform a variety of job-site tests, records test data and interprets test results;
Serves as an assistant inspector to ensure projects are constructed according to plans and specifications; assists in the inspection of clearing and grubbing, earthwork, surfacing, paving, fencing, guardrail, median barriers, etc.; assists with measurements and determining quantities; completes daily records, and other documentation;
Serves as an assistant to construction office engineer; checks calculations including elevations, grades, earthwork, etc.; participates in producing pay estimates; works with schedules, time charges and time extensions; assists in the preparation of contract change orders; involved in tracking and obtaining approval of contractor submittals; assists in compilation of final records and preparation of "as-builts;"
Performs other work as assigned.

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.
Desirable Qualifications
Completion of at least two semesters or three quarters (or equivalent) of study in an engineering curriculum at an accredited college, university, or community college.

Equivalent education/experience.
