Definition

Performs entrance level investigation and analysis of present and potential State parks facilities and designs primitive parks and individual facilities for developed or proposed parks.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Positions at this level work under close supervision.

Typical Work

Conducts reconnaissance of potential park sites for possible acquisition according to agency or IAC criteria; 

Drafts plans for individual facilities within present park facilities; 

Develops sign plans for parks; 

Obtains mapping and other planning information from various governmental agencies and reference sources; 

Writes individual reports on problems that will affect the acquisition or situation of property; 

Collects data to be included in environmental impact statements; 

Submits reports and maps to various governmental agencies, including the Corps of Engineers, for permit issuance; 

Prepares preliminary cost estimates for new parks using published guidelines; 

Performs other work as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:  theory, principles and practices of park planning; interrelationship of structural and topographic elements, soils, ground water, vegetation, and human, social and recreational needs, botany, horticulture, engineering and recreation; architectural and engineering standards; sketching, rendering and drafting technique and instruments; building, planting and heavy construction methods. 

Ability to: learn practical work of determining recreational needs and of acquisition, design and development of park areas to satisfy those needs; plan, layout and draft park development, including sketches, rendering, perspectives and detailed drawings; learn park development cost estimating; learn proper utilization of native plant materials; learn to make fullest use of bodies of salt water, lakes, pools, rivers and streams; place various buildings in relation to one another effectively and efficiently considering approach, air circulation, property enclosures and outdoor recreational uses; write and speak clearly, concisely, accurately and informatively; travel frequently.

Desirable Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree involving major study in park planning, park administration, landscape architecture, land planning, engineering or other major which included course work in park planning, park administration or related field.
