In the Marine Division, Vessel Design Office, prepares skilled sub-professional designs and estimates in the areas of mechanical, electrical or hull specialities for Washington State Ferry vessels.

Prepares complex drawings, from layout to completion, including lists of material, general notes, lists of references, and title blocks; reviews and verifies that equipment matches calculations and penetrations through structure are correctly located and reinforced; reviews and verifies that equipment, material, and design conform to U.S. Marine Regulatory Bodies, Rules and Regulations; 

Prepares specifications for equipment purchases and for shipyard installation and removal; estimates cost for shipyard work and equipment purchases; determines material or equipment required and obtains specifications for the material or equipment; prepares preliminary test memorandum; 

Performs shipchecks to verify that any modifications are installed as shown on plans which will cover the repair, modification, new construction, or modernization of vessels; performs to develop background for drawings and to prepare specifications for repairs and modifications of existing vessels, including the writing of specifications; verifies items to be moved, including location, weight and moment to record the effect on stability; 

Performs other duties such as checking vendor's drawing, drafter's drawings, writing rough drafts of technical reports, memorandum of modification or repair items; 

Performs other duties as required.

Knowledge of:  drafting and illustrating techniques and instruments; arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry and various engineering formulas; marine engineering drafting procedures and equipment. 

Ability to:  prepare working drawings, specifications and plans; develop and maintain effective working relationships; search out and identify appropriate published reference material related to the marine industry; perform construction inspection.

Seven years of experience in a Shipyard Design Office or consulting Naval Architect Office or Marine Engineering Office performing responsible marine technical duties, which include design and development of working drawings for ship conversion, modification, repair and new construction in accordance with U.S. Maritime Regulatory Bodies Rules and Regulations or performing responsible marine technical duties, which include design and development of working drawings for ship conversions, modification, repair and new construction in accordance with international regulatory bodies, rules, and regulations, codes, and conventions of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) or the following classifications agencies; Det Norske Veritas (DNV) and the American Bureau of Shipping (SBS).
