In the Washington State Department of Transportation, Washington State Ferries, terminal design office, with an Engineer-In-Training or Bachelor’s degree in civil or structural engineering, performs a variety of entry professional level ferry terminal and/or facility engineering work under the direct supervision of a licensed engineer.

Develops ferry terminal engineering criteria and formulates an engineering approach employing fundamental engineering principles; 

Prepares or assists in the preparation of design documents, environmental documents and special studies. Assists in the evaluation of alternative designs. Assists in the preparation of plans, specifications and estimates.  Prepares design and construction schedules; 

Prepares and drafts geometric plan, profile and cross-section elements including signing and channelization.  Finalizes horizontal and vertical alignments; 

Calculates quantities, prepares estimates and writes contract specifications and special provisions.  Checks calculations done by others; 

Works closely with WSF Operations maintenance and safety staff in analyzing construction impacts, developing design criteria, impact to operations and work safety,  and evaluating alternatives; 

Reviews records, gathers data in the field and in the office;

Participates in alignment control and location surveying, including overwater surveying and bathymetry.  Performs all duties on a survey crew including chain, rods, prism poles, targets and backsights; soundings; instrument operation; takes notes, downloads and uploads data collector to/from computer, accesses mainframe programs and operates personal computer to calculate curve data, triangulations, benchmarks, grades, etc.; operates electronic plotter; operates a small outboard motorboat; 

Performs traffic counts/studies and prepares basic traffic analysis. Assists in the design of standard traffic elements such as signing, delineation, channelization, signals, and illumination; 

Prepares materials for public meetings and open houses; 

Inspects all types of ferry terminal and facility construction projects; 

Prepares project related information for internal and external communications;   

Performs other work as assigned.

Knowledge of:  engineering principles and practices; surveying procedures and instruments; drafting, arithmetic, geometry, calculus and engineering formulas; CADD drawings and various maps; engineering materials, particularly steel, concrete and timber; environmental concerns, worker safety issues, ferry terminal operations, building construction and upland and marine engineering. 

Ability to:  work as part of a team, understand and solve multi-discipline engineering problems; make computations of quantities, stresses and wide variety of other typical civil and coastal engineering problems; draft maps and working drawings, including details; traverse property lines, road sites and terminal structures; operate an outboard motorboat.

A Bachelor’s degree in civil or structural engineering and Engineer-in-Training certification.  

OR 

Two year’s experience within Washington State Ferries as a Transportation Engineer 1 or Bridge Engineer 1. 

OR 

One year’s experience within Washington State Department of Transportation as a Transportation Engineer 2, Bridge Engineer 2, Transportation Technician 3, or equivalent.  

Note:  Possession of a valid state of Washington driver’s license may be required.
