Definition

This is the specialist assigned to a suspension bridge. Perform journey-level work in the maintenance, repair, operation and reconstruction of bridges and structures.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Individuals in this class have established journey-level skill in one or more trades. Incumbents specialize in one trade or craft but perform journey level work in a variety of disciplines, such as carpentry, welding, steel fabrication, electrical, plumbing, masonry, heavy equipment operations, or hydraulics systems.

Positions in this class are assigned to a bridge maintenance crew.

Typical Work

Performs journey-level maintenance and repair work on the Tacoma Narrows Suspension Bridge;

Operates and maintains movable bridges;

Maintains, repairs, and replaces mechanical equipment cable, systems\elevators, and drainage systems;

Inspects, maintains, and repairs suspension structures, painting, cleaning, and applying epoxy patching as required; adjusts cables, services hydraulic dampers;

Inspects, maintains, and replaces electrical equipment and circuitry involving obstruction lights, wiring, conduit, fixtures, controls, and switches;

Inspects and repairs steel structures and mountings by sand-blasting, welding, heat straightening, fabrication and painting;

Provides traffic control and operates road vehicles as required to accomplish bridge roadway repair and maintenance tasks;

Operates Class A highway equipment in snow and ice control and in support of bridge maintenance activities;

Operates and maintains the work boat used in repair and maintenance of bridges;

Operates special equipment such as boom truck, man lifts, under bridge inspection trucks, maintenance travelers, and hydra platforms;

Repairs and replaces wood, steel, and masonry railings, deck, structure members, caps, pilings, walkways, dolphins, and traffic barrier gates;

Assembles staging, rigging, scaffolding, manual hoists including applying ropes, cables, splices, stinson planks, etc.;

Performs work in construction and repair of buildings and other structures;

Repairs and maintains signs on bridges, walls and tunnels;

Develops preliminary cost estimates of repairs, maintenance or alteration projects;

Performs preventative maintenance and repair on all types of mechanical equipment such as: clean or change filters, change oil, grease, adjust drive belts; inspect sprockets, shafts and bearings to ensure proper operations;

Reads and interprets plans, blueprints and sketches;

Assures adherence to safety rules and precautions by assigned personnel;

Develops solutions to repair and maintenance problems;

May perform work as a lead worker;

Performs other work as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: Spyder rigging and Safway staging; containment procedures; paint preparation procedures and application; carpentry construction, masonry work, electrical service systems, movable span systems and components; equipment inspection and repair; steel fabrication and welding, bridge maintenance inspection; heavy equipment operation; work zone traffic control; safety equipment and procedures; basic computer skills; mathematical calculations; environmental best management practices.

Ability to: rig Spyder harnesses; install Safway staging systems; clean and prepare surfaces for painting; read and interpret engineering plans; use carpentry, masonry, steel fabrication tools, equipment and materials; work at heights requiring fall protection, in confined spaces and in proximity to high volume/high speed traffic; perform basic electrical preventive maintenance and repair; operate heavy equipment and motor vehicles.

Legal Requirement(s)

A valid driver's license is required.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Desirable Qualifications

High school graduation or possession of a GED certificate.

AND

Three years of experience as a Bridge Maintenance Specialist 2. 

OR 

Four years of experience in bridge painting, rigging or in the erection or maintenance of structural steel on high bridges, buildings, towers or dams.

OR

Journey level standing in a construction trade as attested by:

  • Completion of recognized apprenticeship;

OR

  • Full journey status in a trade union;

OR

  • Four years of experience as a full-time helper to a journey worker in the specified trade;

OR

Equivalent education/experience.

Notes:

A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A with endorsement N and without air brakes restriction must be attained within the first six months of employment. Some positions may require the H endorsement which must be attained within 60 days.

Must be capable of working at heights exceeding 300 feet and inside a confined space environment, and/or alongside high speed traffic.
