Definition

Performs skilled mechanical and electrical maintenance and repair work on marine vessels.

Distinguishing Characteristics

In the Department of Corrections, positions at this level directing a crew of inmates either are limited to two positions per institution or must direct crews consisting of three or more inmates.  Positions are also required to be available in the event of an emergency or marine incident, such as vessel mechanical breakdown, chemical or oil spill, etc.

Typical Work

Plans, lays out, directs and inspects work of incarcerated worker crews engaged in the maintenance and repair of marine vessels mechanical and electrical systems;

Establishes schedules and carries out regular marine equipment and machinery inspections, and preventative maintenance;

Operates, maintains and makes repairs on auxiliary engines, electric motors, pumps, winches and other mechanical and electrical equipment;

Assists other staff, contractors and vendors with marine vessel and shore side structure maintenance and repair work;

Responds to emergencies such as vessel mechanical breakdowns and oil spills;

Performs other work as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: relevant industry standards and regulations, operation, maintenance, and repair of marine diesel engines, AC and DC electrical systems, marine electronics, shipboard piping systems, vessel deck machinery, shipyard equipment and tools.

Ability to: supervise incarcerated worker crews; estimate materials, time and personnel needed to accomplish essential task; use mechanic's tools and equipment needed to accomplish work; follow oral and written instructions; maintain logs and records; use Microsoft Office products; perform work in all weather conditions.

Desirable Qualifications

Two years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of marine diesel engines, shipboard mechanical systems, shipboard equipment, and marine electrical systems.
