Class Series Concept
Positions in this series are responsible for a variety of work on electrical and electronic systems used in transportation and highway infrastructure owned or operated by the Department of Transportation and connecting local and national transportation infrastructure. Positions perform work in accordance with national, state and local code in one or more of the following categories.
- Roadside power supply and distribution systems
- Traffic signals and warning beacon systems
- Highway illumination and other transportation infrastructure lighting systems
- Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) including ramp meters, variable message signs, traffic cameras and traffic data collection equipment
- Weigh-in-motion and roadside data collection systems
- Electrical and electronic systems associated with tunnel operations
- Fire and fire safety control systems in tunnel and other associated transportation structures
- Fiber optic and server-based security and building control systems
- Electrical and electronic systems associated with movable and floating bridges
- Navigation lights, aviation lights, foghorns, and weather information systems associated with fixed bridges
- Communication systems, highway advisory radios and associated equipment
- Tolling equipment and systems
Definition
In a training capacity, assists higher-level Electrical and Electronic Systems Specialists by performing basic installation, maintenance and repair of electrical and electronic components used in transportation and highway infrastructure. Under close supervision, positions perform a variety of routine tasks in accordance with applicable code requirements and agency specifications.
Distinguishing Characteristics
This is the trainee level of the series. Positions work under close supervision performing routine semi-skilled or sub-journey tasks such as minor repairs, scheduled preventative maintenance and testing of electrical and electronic equipment at the direction of a higher-level Electrical and Electronic Systems Specialist.
Typical Work
Assists with troubleshooting, diagnosing and making minor repairs to highway illumination equipment, traffic signals and loops;
Writes and deploys program code for traffic signals cabinet computer and controls;
Reads and interprets schematics, plans and drawings and assists with configuring electrical and electronic components and equipment accordingly;
Utilizes industry-standard electrical and electronic test equipment such as volt-ohm-milliammeter or multimeter, megger or ohmmeter, circuit or signal tracer and thermal imager;
Assists with electrical wiring and splicing;
Responds to reports of malfunctioning electrical and electronic equipment within the state highway right-of-way;
Assists higher-level specialists in diagnosing routine electrical and electronic problems in control systems, signal systems, flashing beacons, pedestrian signals, highway illumination systems, detection systems, overhead and underground wiring systems and changeable/variable message signs;
Performs underground locates. of electrical systems and fiber optic communications systems;
Installs, maintains, repairs and calibrates statewide network of traffic data systems including weigh-in-motion and automatic vehicle identification systems. Replace sensors for traffic count recorders;
Assists higher-level specialists in installing, maintaining, repairing, and calibrating equipment in video, GPS, and range tracking vehicles;
Works on low voltage systems; assists higher-level specialists working on high voltage systems;
Assists others installing, maintaining and repairing motor control centers for bridges and tunnels;
Operates a variety of hand tools and field equipment such as pavement saws, tar, kettles, blowers, hoists, generators, ditch digger, trencher, shovel, pick, directional boring equipment, pressure washers, excavators, auger and boom truck and electronic test equipment;
Sets up and maintains safe work zone including proper flagging methods and backup assistance when needed;
Fills out daily work reports and documents preventative maintenance;
Keeps truck job-ready at all times; check truck stock, replaces used inventory and gathers materials needed for each job;
Performs daily and weekly truck inspections;
Attends monthly safety meetings and safety classes;
Other duties as required.

Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: elementary principles and practices of electronics, electrical measures and circuitry; basic mathematics and high school level algebra; electrical and work zone safety precautions; record keeping; and standard practices for proper operation of hand tools and motor-driven equipment.
Ability to: configure and repair common defects in electronic equipment, components and systems; read and understand electrical and electronic schematic diagrams, plans and drawings; operate various hand tools, power tools and construction equipment.
