Definition
Independently performs basic, routine installation, maintenance and repair of electrical and electronic components used in transportation and highway infrastructure in accordance with applicable code requirements and agency specifications.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Positions work under general supervision performing semi-skilled or sub-journey tasks such as minor repairs, scheduled preventative maintenance and testing of electrical and electronic equipment.
Typical Work
Responds to reports of routine malfunctioning electrical or electronic equipment within the state highway right-of-way and troubleshoot, diagnose and make minor repairs to highway illumination equipment, traffic signals, control and detection systems, Intelligent Transportation Systems equipment, cameras, flashing beacons and overhead and underground wiring systems;
Assists with programming software and configuration of network connections for all components in traffic signal and ITS cabinets;
Reads and interpret schematics, plans and drawings and configures electrical and electronic components and equipment accordingly;
Utilizes industry-standard electrical and electronic test equipment such as volt-ohm-milliammeter or multimeter, megger or ohmmeter, circuit or signal tracer and thermal imager;
Performs electrical wiring and splicing;
Communicates with Traffic Management Center for field problems;
Installs, maintains, repairs and calibrates statewide network of traffic data systems including weigh-in-motion and automatic vehicle identification systems;
Replaces sensors for traffic count recorders;
Installs, maintains, repair and calibrates equipment in video, Global Positioning System and range tracking vehicles;
Works on low and high voltage systems;
Installs, maintains and repairs motor control centers for bridges and tunnels;
Other duties as required.

Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: installation, maintenance and operation of industrial electronic instrumentation, including elementary principles and practices of electronics, electrical measures and circuitry; basic mathematics and high school level algebra; general construction and field operations; safety precautions; record keeping.
Ability to: configure and repair common defects in electronic equipment, components and systems; read and understand electrical and electronic schematic diagrams, plans and drawings; operate various hand tools, power tools and construction equipment.

Desirable Qualifications
High school graduation or GED.
Two (2) years (approximately 4,000 hours) of relevant experience performing technical electrical and electronic work;
Completion of equivalent, relevant professional formal training through an electrical apprenticeship program, accredited electrical or electronics training program, vocational or technical school, military-based electrical/electronics training, agency-specific in-training plan;
Associates degree in electrical or electronics technology may substitute for some education or experience.
Some positions require a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) without air brake restriction (Class A or Class B); radio operator license, Journey or Master Level Electrician (EL01, EL06, EL07, or ME01); and/or Electronics certification.
AND
