Definition

In a photographic laboratory, performs printing and processing of panchromatic (black and white) photography utilizing manual and automated electronic equipment. Produces glass plotting plates, contact and enlargement prints and paper and film enlargements.

Distinguishing Characteristics

The majority of work assigned involves the reproduction of aerial photography through black and white photographic processing. Incumbents also receive training in color processing.

Typical Work

Makes aerial contact prints and glass plates using manual and automatic scanning/ dodging equipment; 

Prints standard and scale ratioed enlargements using aerial enlargers on paper and film positive transparencies; 

Processes panchromatic aerial roll film negatives using both manual and automatic processors; 

Selects and blends chemicals for processing of panchromatic prints, film and glass plates; 

Washes, dries, trims, sorts and packs for shipment contact and enlargement prints, and glass plates; 

Receives on‑the‑job training in the reproduction of aerial color photography; 

Performs other work as may be required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:  physical and chemical characteristics of photographic materials; exposing, printing and processing techniques; fundamentals of aerial photography. 

Ability to: distinguish and recognize proper densities and contrasts of photographic products; handle delicate photographic equipment with care; work in confined, dark areas for extended periods of time.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Desirable Qualifications

Two years of full‑time paid laboratory experience in commercial or industrial photography, reprographics or photolithography. Education in commercial or industrial photography, reprographics or photolithography may be substituted, year for year, for experience.
