Typical Work
Inspects buildings, grounds, and equipment; determines need for maintenance and repair; assigns work to employees and inspects projects in progress and upon completion; makes reports;
Directs operation of facilities such as heating, water distribution, power and light, gas, steam, refrigeration, laundry, and sanitation;
Proposes alterations to existing facilities, including preparation of plans, specifications, and estimates of cost; confers with department heads, planning committees, engineers, architects, and contractors regarding preparation of plans for major construction and alteration;
Confers with and directs activities of journey-level craftworkers who supervise and carry out work in their trades;
Confers with supervisor on budget requests and maintenance and repair of buildings and equipment;
Responsible for requisitioning of materials, supplies, and equipment and maintenance of controls over storage and use; analyzes maintenance and operating costs and prepares reports;
Directs fire safety operations and trains subordinates in safety precautions;
Inspects construction projects for conformance to plans and specifications;
Performs other work as required.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: construction, maintenance, and repair of buildings, grounds, plumbing and electrical systems, and building fixtures and equipment; materials and supplies used in building and equipment maintenance and construction; preparation of plans and specifications for construction and alteration of buildings; occupational hazards and safety precautions.
Ability to: plan, assign, coordinate, and supervise work of maintenance, construction, and operation of employees, patients or inmates; plan long-range maintenance program; prepare comprehensive reports.
Legal Requirement(s)
Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.
Desirable Qualifications
Three years of supervisory experience in operation and/or maintenance of physical plant in large industrial, commercial or public establishment.
Note: Experience supervising and/or directing a crew of at least three inmates in a State correctional institution engaged in the operation and/or maintenance of a physical plant will be considered qualifying supervisory experience as required above.
