Definition

Performs semi-skilled natural resource related labor activities; performs technical natural resource management activities under explicit guidance; independently performs and/or leads a crew of up to four laborers performing natural resource labor.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Positions in this class are accountable for a variety of natural resource land management tasks that do not require a formal natural resource education. 

  • Examples of semi-skilled laboring tasks include: operating and maintaining pump trucks, power saws, trail diggers, snowmobiles, crew buses, boats, light trucks and trailers, pumps, cameras, scales, hoists, and similar equipment; acting as a timber selection/marking/measurement crew member; enforcing recreation regulations; taking measurements and recording weight, values, and payments of forest, agricultural and/or aquatic products, monitoring and cross checking records.
  • Examples of technical natural resource management activities performed under explicit guidance include conducting reforestation surveys, performing assigned technical activities in contract administration such as precommercial thinning plot measurement.
  • Examples of labor performed independently or as a small crew leader include brush disposal, reforestation, recreation trail/site/facility construction and maintenance, precommercial thinning, plantation maintenance, building and grounds care and/or fence building and maintenance. 

Employees receive explicit instruction on unfamiliar technical tasks and perform work by standard methods and procedures.

Typical Work

Drives pump trucks, crew buses, tractors, stakesides and other equipment used to do natural resource labor tasks; operates and trains laborers to operate pumps, power saws, trail diggers, augers and similar small power equipment; uses and trains laborers to use and maintain hand tools to do laboring activities; 

As a pit person for Equipment Operators or heavy construction crews, performs equipment oiler responsibilities and support activities in construction and maintenance of roads such as labor in culvert installation, ditch cleaning, drainage system installation, equipment care, parts runner, small vehicle operation; may operate dump trucks, dozers, graders and similar heavy forestry equipment under supervision as training for higher positions; 

Leads small crew and performs brush disposal, tree planting, precommercial thinning, recreation site and trail maintenance and/or construction, weeding and/or other timber stand improvement activities;  

Selects, marks and measures trees for selective harvest under direct supervision;

Assists foresters, land managers and technicians in technical resource management activities such as cutting brush and rear chainperson for land and road survey; lays out hand compass and pace lines, tallies, measures or weights products, draws sketch maps, and similar help in timber cruising, hardshell clam product sales and reforestation surveys;  

Operates and maintains vehicles and boats, uses and maintains power tools, hoists, buoys, marker and other equipment;  

Helps professional and technical natural resource land managers in performing technical tasks such as survey, under-water video operation for site and operation monitoring in sale administration and layout;  

Leads a small crew of laborers and performs set up of aquatic research equipment and facilities, aquatic recreation site maintenance, or similar laboring tasks; 

Performs other work as required.

Legal Requirement(s)

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Desirable Qualifications

High school graduation or GED and three months of natural resource related labor experience. 

OR

One year as a Natural Resource Worker 1. 

Note:  Must be at least 18 years of age at time of appointment. 

Note:  Must possess a current valid driver's license. 

Note:  Incumbents may be required to obtain one or more specialized skill qualifications or licenses, including but not limited to: 

  • Commercial Driver's license with appropriate endorsements;
  • Motorcycle endorsement to driver's license;
  • Public Pesticide Applicator's license.
