Definition
Performs unskilled forest nursery labor under close direction and specific assignment.
Typical Work
Lifts seedlings, plants, and trees for transplanting; assists in setting up and operating irrigation equipment as directed; plants seed and seedlings with seedling feeder on mechanical planter, or by using hand‑powered planting machine; load and unload bundles of seedlings from trucks for warehousing;
Table sorts’ seedling trees; culls damaged, dry, and misshapen trees; counts and ties them into bundles, and places them in bags and transfers to cold storage;
Wets beds of seedling trees by hand; counts trees in sample plots; hand thins seedlings with pruning shears;
Follows simple procedures to assist in seed germination tests and to stratify seeds;
Uses hand, farm, and garden tools ‑ power strapping machine, hand sprayer, pot fillers, and compactors;
Fixes soils for seedling blocks, sow seed in blocks, water and fertilize greenhouse plants; moves seedling blocks from one house or area to another;
Maintains buildings, grounds, and equipment in orderly condition ‑ sweep floors, dump garbage cans, wash seedling blocks, maintains restroom areas, make minor repairs;
Works in the tree improvement program, caring for plants, equipment, and facilities at the seed orchard;
Operates light trucks and farm equipment;
Must be physically capable of performing all of the duties and responsibilities of the position, some of which involve lifting fertilizer bags, irrigation pipe, seedling bins, etc., weighing up to 50 pounds, and standing, bending, kneeling, stooping or working in cramped quarters over long periods of time;
Performs other similar work as required.
Knowledge and Abilities
Ability to: perform physical labor, follow highly repetitive procedures and quickly sort and tie tree bundles; perform close, tedious work requiring good manual dexterity; use hand, farm, and garden tools safely and efficiently.
