Definition

Directs a crew of 5 to 10 individuals performing natural resource management activities, such as, maintaining roads, trails, and headquarters sites, or rehabilitating streams.

Typical Work

Performs and/or participates in recruiting, selecting, hiring and orientation of crew members and lead workers; 

Supervises small crews in tree planting; plantation maintenance; herbicide application; stream clean-out; forest road maintenance; recreation site and trail maintenance and construction; building, facilities, and grounds maintenance and/or other natural resource activities; 

Implements prescribed work plans including coordination with responsible managers; provides or arranges for standard hand tools, power saws, equipment and supplies; assigns work and directs the crew in all work activities; plans, arranges for and/or conducts training as needed to safely and effectively do the assigned crew work; inspects, evaluates, guides, and corrects the performance of all crew members; 

Performs or directs operating maintenance on hand tools, vehicles, power saws, pumps, facilities and other assigned equipment; maintains equipment accountability; 

Performs other work as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: methods and practices of supervision; proper use and care of forestry and construction hand tools, measurement tools, vehicles, small motor equipment, and other equipment; natural resource activities. 

Ability to: supervise and train young adults to safely and effectively perform forestry and other natural resource activities; effectively communicate and work safely.

Legal Requirement(s)

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Desirable Qualifications

Six months of experience as a Natural Resource Worker 2

OR

Six months of experience supervising a crew performing outdoor physical labor.

OR

An A.A. degree in a natural resource technology program. 

Note: Must possess a valid driver's license without major restrictions.

Note: Incumbents may be required to obtain one or more specialized licenses, including, but not limited to: 

  1. Public Pesticide Applicators license
  1. Intermediate or combination endorsements to driver's license.
