Definition

Supervises a crew of over 10 individuals performing natural resource management activities, such as, maintaining roads, trails, and headquarters sites, or rehabilitating streams.

Typical Work

Performs and/or participates in recruiting, selection, hiring and orientation of crewmembers;

Supervises crews in tree planting; pre‑commercial thinning; recreation site and trail work; stream clean-out; plantation maintenance; herbicide application; road, bridge and culvert maintenance; building and facilities maintenance and/or other natural resource activities; supervises large crews of manual laborers or small crews of semi‑skilled workers in the foregoing activities; 

Coordinates work planning and scheduling with local units and other agencies; arranges for materials and equipment as needed; assigns work, directs the crew and delegates to lead workers and specialists and the assignment and direction of all work activities; plans, arranges for and/or conducts training as needed to safely and effectively do the work; inspects, evaluates, guides and corrects the performance of all crew members; 

Performs or directs operating maintenance on hand tools, vehicles, power saws, pumps, and facilities; maintains equipment accountability; 

Operates power saws falling large trees (over 24" d.b.h.) and snags; operates recreation trail construction machines, small portable yarders and saw mills, 10‑12 yard dump trucks, small backhoes, small dozers and other equipment similar to those operated by Equipment Operator 2's in building and repair of forest roads, sites, bridges, trails, camp sites, buildings and facilities; and herbicide application; repairs, maintains accountability for assigned equipment; supervises pit persons and manual laborers; 

Performs other work as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: methods and practices of supervision; proper use of forestry and construction hand tools, measurement tools, vehicles, small motor equipment and heavy equipment; natural resource activities. 

Ability to: supervise and train young adults and subordinate leaders and specialists to safely and effectively perform forestry and other natural resource activities; operate heavy equipment; fall large trees and snags; perform a variety of forest crafts; effectively communicate and work safely.

Legal Requirement(s)

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Desirable Qualifications

Six months of experience as a supervisor of a forestry crew.

OR

An A.A. degree in a natural resource technology program and three months' experience as the supervisor of a forestry crew. 

OR

One year of experience as a timber faller, forestry equipment operator, forest technician, or lead worker in forestry activities. 

Note: Must possess a valid driver’s license without major restrictions. 

Note: Incumbents may be required to obtain one or more specialized licenses, including, but not limited to: 

  1. Public Pesticide Applicators license 
  2. Intermediate or combination endorsements to driver's license.
