Definition

Takes black and white and color still and motion pictures; takes digital pictures; develops and processes film and digital images.

Distinguishing Characteristics

First-level class of series. Under general supervision, using film and digital cameras, takes and develops black and white and color photographs.

Typical Work

Makes motion pictures and still photographs of individuals, groups, projects, or any State operation which may be used for news releases, safety promotion, law enforcement, training,  technical, instructional, public information, legal evidence, or record of progress of construction; plans photographic layouts; 

Takes photographs such as photos of specimens, photo micrographs and high speed photographs for scientific use; 

Uses digital SLR cameras (high resolution) for capturing photographic images; 

Edits, enhances, retouches and resizes digital images using specialized software and computers;  

Uses press, commercial view, miniature, portrait, and other still photographic equipment; tests new equipment, processes, and chemicals; makes minor repairs to photographic equipment; 

Maintains work records; identifies, marks, and files negatives and prints; requisitions supplies and equipment; inventories and orders supplies and equipment; 

Confers with clients regarding photographic projects and provides technical advice; 

Mixes developers, fixers, and other chemical solutions; develops film; makes contact and protection prints; retouches and combines negative and spots prints; 

Develops narrative script and blends picture and sound in production of movies and television shorts for news release.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: operation, adjustment, and maintenance of press, commercial view, miniature, portrait, motion picture, and other professional cameras; operation of digital SLR cameras; operation of various equipment such as film negative scanners, high resolution flatbed scanners, and digital card readers; methods and techniques to use in obtaining well-composed, clear photographs; properties, characteristics, uses, and processing of photographic materials; light, lenses, and photographic optics; types of developers and chemical solutions most effective on various types of film and paper. 

Ability to: plan, compose, and produce still photographs and motion pictures with news, public relations, instructional, and evidential value; develop negatives; edit, enhance, retouch, and resize digital images using specialized software and computers;  make contact and protection prints; meet and work with public; keep records and files.

Desirable Qualifications

Two years of experience in still photography.

Equivalent education/experience.
