Definition
Compiles, computes and assembles data to be used in reports, studies, surveys and forecasts.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Incumbents take data from established sources, review it for completeness, compile and tabulate, making computations and preparing summaries when necessary. Positions at this level follow step-by-step procedures and are not required to determine sources of data, as is expected at higher levels in this class series.
Typical Work
Uses computer to assist in compiling information;
Compiles numerical and/or narrative data from identified sources into standard forms;
Prepares, tables, charts and graphs as required;
Assists in studies, surveys and the preparation of reports by gathering and computing numerical information; drafts for supervisor's review narrative interpretation of information to be included in reports;
Reviews numerical data for accuracy and completeness; reviews reports for clarity and accuracy; refers questionable data or narrative to supervisor for clarification;
May provide information to other employees, the public, community organizations, or other governmental agencies concerning a project or study assigned to them;
Performs other duties as required.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: arithmetic; basic English; office procedures and equipment; techniques for gathering and compiling data; chart and graph preparation.
Ability to: interpret and present data clearly in tabular or graphic form; operate office machines such as adding machines, calculators, typewriters, personal computers, etc.; make arithmetical computations quickly and accurately; follow written and/or oral instructions; compose narratives to accompany data.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.
Desirable Qualifications
High school graduation or G.E.D.
AND
Two years of business, government, or military clerical experience.
College or business school training may be substituted, year for year, for required clerical experience.
