Definition

This is the senior, specialist, or leadworker level of the series. Leads assigned staff and functions as a fully qualified technician performing journey level technical tasks operating offset duplicating, or bindery machines. Regularly assigns, instructs, and checks the work of others. May supervise and train lower technicians, clerical staff, temporary or resident clerical staff, volunteers, or interns.

Typical Work

Trains others in all techniques of offset reproduction or use of phototypesetting equipment;

Leads assigned staff in the operations and support of the unit; recommends changes and improvements of unit routines or procedures; evaluates and monitors work processes;

Orders supplies and maintains inventory;

Monitors work volume and reviews work orders at assigned copy centers; reassigns staff and/or jobs between centers to meet production deadlines and optimize productivity;

Performs complex offset duplication involving precise registration, multi-color, or systems runs;

Prepares disposable and master metal plates including masking, stripping, and opaque negatives; performs support functions in stock room; maintains daily records and reports;

Proofs copy, makes corrections in grammar, punctuation and format;

Transforms rough draft in phototype copy; selects proper line length, leading, kerning, font, and type style;

May supervise lower level staff.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: plate preparation and layout work; grades, weights, and kinds of paper; inks and chemicals used in duplicating machine work; safety procedures, hazardous chemicals involved in printing operations: all bindery practices and equipment used for drilling, stitching, and collating.

Ability to: operate offset duplicating machine capable of volume reproduction of typed, handwritten and photographic material; operate photographic master unit, power paper cutter, and related equipment; meet deadlines and production requirements; follow written and oral instructions; perform all bindery activities quickly and accurately; maintain responsibility for a variety of bindery procedures without regular direction;

Desirable Qualifications

High school graduation or equivalent and two years' experience operating microfilm, offset duplicating, bindery, or copy machines. Some positions allow completion of a vocational school reprographics program for one year of the required experience.
