TAX SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE 1
Definition
At a tax collective, tax review, tax registration or tax assistance office; provides service by giving authoritative information relative to tax liability and proper tax reporting procedures for such taxes as unemployment compensation tax, special fuel tax, motor vehicle excise tax, industrial insurance premiums or business and occupation tax. Provides assistance to compliance and audit personnel assigned to the office.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Incumbents are primarily concerned with assisting individuals, business or their duly authorized representatives by providing tax information, establishing temporary or permanent accounts and handling over-the-counter collections; or, in the Department of Revenue Taxpayer Accounts Control Section, performs work directly related to the registration of new Taxpayer Accounts.
Typical Work
Assists taxpayers or their duly authorized representatives by providing tax information by informing, answering questions and in preparing forms;
Receives and receipts tax monies;
Performs, on a limited basis, some preliminary collection efforts by telephone under direct supervision;
Determines eligibility and issues waivers of Use Tax; determines eligibility and issues nonresident tax exemption permits; adjusts warrants and computes interest;
Determines liability for unemployment insurance; prepares and adjusts quarterly tax reports and computes interests; serves legal documents in office
Registers new business and corrects existing accounts when required;
Processes monies received, makes transmittals, balance receipts and prepares deposit;
Maintains certain office records, logs of delinquent notices, balance due notices and investigations;
Performs secretarial or clerical duties, answers correspondence from brief notes or prepares letters independently;
Determines liability for motor vehicle excise tax, adjusts annual vehicle excise tax; computes and collects proper motor fees;
Answers inquiries relating to Industrial Insurance; such as coverage, classification and rating system, underwriting, tax and contract release forms;
Opens tax accounts for new businesses; assigns tax classifications; computes and collects sums due for bond deposits and corrects existing accounts;
Provides up-to-date information to tax payers about their tax accounts;
Performs other duties as required.

Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: basis tax laws, rules of the Revenue Act of Employment Security Act policy and laws governing departmental program.
Ability to: answer general questions related to basic tax laws; communicate effectively with the public, orally and in writing; maintain responsibility for a variety of activities without regular direction; type at occupational levels of speed and accuracy; maintain courteous attitude toward public and fellow employees.

Desirable Qualifications
Two years of college course work, involving major study in business administration, accounting, public administration, police science, law or closely allied field.
OR
Two years of clerk/typist experience involving tax-related work, of which one year must be at the Office Assistant Senior level or above.
OR
Two years of experience in the field of personal finance, law enforcement, adjustment of claims, collection of civil debts or other directly related field.
