Definition
Under general supervision of a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse, leads and provides information to Nursing Assistants and assists in the delivery of nursing and nursing related care to patients or residents in a health care facility. Positions perform routine tasks in direct and indirect patient care, transportation, and maintenance of a patient care area such as assisting with daily living activities; preparing patients for surgery; performing non-invasive lab procedures; transporting patients, equipment and supplies; assisting with treatments; and conducting various clerical tasks.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Under general supervision, regularly assigns, instructs and checks the work of Nursing Assistants. Assists in carrying out the services of the unit by serving as a contact for other patient care providers, resolving problems, collecting and analyzing quality control data, and developing and presenting inservices to Nursing Assistants.
Typical Work
Leads and assists Nursing Assistants in routine work; develops and implements the daily staffing schedule; provides input to supervisors on performance of Nursing Assistants; assists in orienting and training new Nursing Assistants to established standards for specific worksite/patient care requirements;
Assists residents or patients with personal care and activities of daily living such as bathing, personal grooming, hygiene, dressing, eating, positioning, transferring, taking of fluids, nutrition, and ambulation; participates in creating and maintaining a pleasant environment;
Performs basic nursing procedures such as applying anti-embolism stockings, taking temperatures, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure; applies barrier cream and lotions to intact skin;
Applies external appliances such as braces, urosheaths, hearing aids and performs both active and passive range of motion;
Documents the care given and information regarding the resident or patient; keeps licensed staff informed about conditions and alerts them to changes; observes, records and reports resident/patient behavior;
Maintains a clean, safe and sanitary environment; changes linen, distributes personal laundry, cleans spills and personal areas of residents;
Serves as point of contact to other patient care providers;
Assists technologists and other staff in resolving problems concerning equipment functioning, staff coverage, and interpretation of policies and procedures;
Collects and analyzes data for use in quality control functions;
Serves as information resource to Nursing Assistants in areas such as automated information systems, supply delivery schedules, and equipment assembly;
Performs the work of Nursing Assistants;
Performs related duties as required.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: leading and teaching techniques, methods and practices of basic nursing and restorative care, personal hygiene and sanitation methods, record keeping, report presentation, infection control procedures and patient/resident rights.
Ability to: use judgment and knowledge; lead and work effectively with others; promote a positive living environment for residents relating to meeting psychosocial needs; follow written and verbal directions; document observed changes in patient condition and behavior.

Desirable Qualifications
High School graduation
AND
one year of Nursing Assistant experience.
OR
Equivalent education/experience.
Note: A Washington State license to practice as a “Nursing Assistant - Certified” may be required.
Additionally, for positions in Nursing Homes participating in Federal Medicare and/or Medicaid programs applicants must be listed as active on the Omnibus Reconciliation Act (OBRA) Nurse Assistant Registry with no disqualifying findings or convictions.
Continued employment in this class in Nursing Homes participating in Federal Medicare and/or Medicaid programs is contingent upon maintaining certification on the Nurse Assistant OBRA Registry with no disqualifying findings or convictions.
