Definition

Teaches preschool, elementary, secondary, or pre-vocational school subjects to blind, visually impaired and multi-handicapped children with a visual impairment; assists with extra-curricular activities.

Typical Work

Diagnoses learning problems; devises instructional strategies; develops and uses special instructional materials, devices and techniques; evaluates student progress;

Prepares lessons and teaches subjects such as Braille and large type reading, basic sciences, mathematics, language, literature, social studies, physical education, music, home-living skills, pre-vocational skills, career exploration, typing, and daily living skills, through group or individual instruction;

Prepares individual educational programs and reports of progress, abilities and attendance of each pupil, for school officials and parents;

Attends teacher's meetings and completes committee assignments; discusses and resolves curriculum problems; coordinates instructional plans and programs;

Coordinates with other staff members providing services within the classroom;

Maintains classroom and corridor discipline; assists in planning, carrying out, and supervising class and student club activities such as class parties, dances, field trips, shows, skating and excursions;

Supervises, counsels, and evaluates student teachers in their instruction of students at the school;

Performs other work as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: academic course work to be taught; modern educational principles and methods applicable to teaching blind and multi-handicapped; Braille, mobility, Optacon, abacus, and auditory training; listening skills, and total communication.

Ability to: teach blind children effectively; gain interest, respect and cooperation of students, parents and professional co-workers; develop socially acceptable attitudes in students; speak and write effectively.

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Desirable Qualifications

Washington State (OSPI) Certification in Special Education of the Blind and Visually impaired.

Equivalent education/experience.
