PHARMACIST SUPERVISOR

Definition

Supervises staff; performs professional pharmaceutical work including developing, implementing, and evaluating pharmacy services; and interfacing with pharmacy managers to resolve day-to-day practice issues and promote pharmaceutical care.  

OR 

Within the Department of Health, Board of Pharmacy, supervises all pharmacists involved with compliance and enforcement activities; provides leadership and training to subordinate staff; manages the department's statewide pharmacy compliance, enforcement, and educational programs; acts as liaison between the department/board and other law enforcement agencies; identifies pharmacy and drug-related trends that may require department and/or board action; assists the Executive Director in administration of the Board of Pharmacy.

Distinguishing Characteristics

With delegated authority, interviews and recommends selection of applicants, trains new employees, assigns and schedules work, conducts annual performance evaluations and recommends disciplinary action. Participates in the development and implementation of departmental goals and mission.

Typical Work

Plans, assigns, supervises the work, and works with pharmacists and other pharmacy staff; keeps work schedules, work load reports and time record for pharmacy personnel; reviews and evaluates performance; implements corrective measures to address deficiencies; recommends appropriate disciplinary action; determines staffing requirements; interviews and selects staff;  

Oversees day-to-day operations of an assigned pharmacy area;  

Plans, develops, organizes, operates and evaluates pharmacy services;   

Assists with preparation and monitoring of the annual budget for pharmacy services;   

Directs and guides pharmacy personnel in pharmacy operation, compounding, labeling, dispensing of medications and legend devices;  

Develops and maintains a medication list;  

Directs and fills prescription orders or prescriptions; Prepares estimates; requisitions, receives, and stores medications, pharmaceuticals, instruments, dressings, apparatus, and surgical supplies;  

Keeps perpetual inventory of all controlled substances; monitors expiration dates and removes medications from active stock when they expire; ensures proper destruction of controlled substances and maintains appropriate records;  

Works with nursing personnel and others to develop and/or teach in-services;  

Assures compliance with all pharmacy laws and regulations and assures policies and procedures are updated;  

Coordinates and oversees departmental orientation for new employees and volunteers;  

Coordinates the development and institution of clinical competency exams on a continuing basis for pharmacists;  

Participates in the education of pharmacists, pharmacy students, and other health professionals in the areas of applied pharmatherapeutics, and the safe and economical use of pharmacological agents;  

Participates in quality improvement and quality assurance programs; 

Participates in pharmacy and hospital committees;

Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: new medications and current pharmacy standards of practice; operations and pharmacy programs to be used in updating pharmacy operations. 

Ability to: understand oral and written directions pertaining to pharmaceutical work; plan and organize work effectively; supervise and maintain working relations within the pharmacy and other departments.

Legal Requirement(s)

A valid Washington State license to practice pharmacy or eligibility to obtain licensure prior to employment.

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Desirable Qualifications

Four years of pharmacy experience.

New class, consolidates 6031 Pharmacist Supervisor, 53680 Pharmacist Supervisor; adopted May 10, 2007, effective July 1, 2007.
Base range salary adjustment adopted 6/30/2017, effective 7/1/2017.
