CAMPUS SECURITY/SAFETY SUPERVISOR
Definition
Supervise all security and safety operations of a community or state college; may direct and administer parking and/or other related functions.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Positions within this class have total responsibility for 24-hour coverage of all security, safety and related activities, under direction of an administrative official. Typically, supervise 2 to 10 full-time equivalent employees including campus security officers.
Typical Work
Plan, direct, and supervise all phases of the institution security system, traffic and safety program;
Develop departmental operating budget;
Schedule and assign security personnel to shifts and provide training to develop competent security personnel;
Participate in personnel transactions such as appointments, promotions, disciplinary actions and discharges; hire departmental employees;
Make reports and maintain files pertinent to the operation of the department;
Conduct investigations of criminal activity involving violation of campus regulations, or local, state, or federal statute;
Meet with administrative staff and local law enforcement agencies regarding mutual problems; provide assistance upon request;
Investigate complaints concerning campus parking and safety;

Investigate accidents and injuries and recommend corrective action if necessary;
Perform related duties as required.

Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: rules governing access to buildings and grounds; rules of behavior; general safety precautions and fire hazards; methods and procedures in dealing with clients, visitors, staff; methods and procedures for searching for escapees and violators; fire fighting equipment and fire prevention methods; first aid; report preparation and writing; verbal communication skills; observation skills; law enforcement basics; investigation procedures; electronic security systems.
Ability to: learn rules and enforce them; follow written and oral instructions; meet emergencies and employ effective courses of action; write reports; investigate incidents and obtain pertinent information; observe and detect suspicious situations; communicate with staff, residents and general public; apply first aid; operate electronic security equipment; use fire fighting equipment.

Desirable Qualifications
High school graduation or equivalent; possession of a valid driver's license; two years of work experience as a campus police or security officer or equivalent experience or training; no previous felony conviction. U.S. citizenship, lawful permanent resident, or a Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipient, unless prohibited by other state or federal law, who can speak, read and write the English language may be required.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
