Distinguishing Characteristics
With delegated authority, interview and recommend selection of applicants, conduct training, assign and schedule work, act upon leave requests, conduct annual performance evaluations and recommend disciplinary action.
Typical Work
Coordinate payroll policies and procedures with the fiscal office, with data processing personnel, and with major department heads;
Establish work procedures; determine deadlines; establish pay dates and schedules;
Schedule payroll processing; assign or perform automated payroll file maintenance; maintain the integrity of the local payroll computer system;
Ensure timely payment of various deductions to vendors, insurance providers, and government entities;
Review accounting and bookkeeping practices for conformance with institution, state, and federal requirements; institute changes as necessary;
Issue instructions on payroll procedures, coordinated payroll processing, and maintaining records to applicable departmental personnel; conduct payroll processing training for campus staff;
May coordinate the employee benefits program;
Perform the duties of Payroll Coordinator;
Legal Requirement(s)
Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.
Desirable Qualifications
Four years' fiscal/payroll or related experience including two years as a Payroll Technician or equivalent. Completion of college-level education which includes accounting courses may be substituted for one year of experience.
