Perform and apply advanced, specialized electron microscopy techniques making independent examination of material. Serve as technical consultant to faculty and investigators with diagnostic problems or research projects. Develop and apply new techniques or procedures applicable to diagnostic ultrastructural pathology or research. Direct the work of, and instruct, post-doctoral fellows, students, or student helpers and/or direct the operation of an electron microscopy laboratory.

Positions may lead and/or direct lower level staff; 

Performs special or difficult ultrastructural procedures such as autoradiography, immunoelectron microscopy, serial sectioning, cryo-thin sectioning, cryo-fracture, ultrastructural enzyme cytochemistry, shadowing, negative staining, and scanning electron microscopy;  

Provides technical consultation to faculty and investigators with diagnostic problems or research projects involving the use of the electron microscopy laboratory;  

Instructs and directs work operations; oversees the operation of, training, and maintenance of an electron microscope; makes minor repairs and determines service needs;  

Develops and implements new procedures; conducts literature searches and adapts techniques to specific clinical and/or research needs;  

Maintains workload recording system; purchases and maintains laboratory equipment such as ultramicrotomes, knife makers, balances, and dark room equipment;  

Instructs post-doctoral fellows, technicians, or student helpers in laboratory procedures; 

May supervise lower level staff.

A Bachelor's degree in a science-related field which includes coursework in such areas as chemistry, biology, geology, natural sciences, or related sciences,

AND 

Two years of experience in an electron microscopy laboratory 

OR 

Equivalent education/experience.
