Definition
Assist the Bookstore Manager in managing the daily operation of a large bookstore with net annual sales of at least $600,000.
Distinguishing Characteristics
First level class of series. Under general direction of a Bookstore Manager manage the operation of a campus Bookstore. This class is distinguished from the Bookstore Manager level by the lack of final responsibility for meeting profit margin objectives, inventory requirements and security requirements of a college bookstore. Act with authority in the absence of a Bookstore Manager; supervise bookstore personnel.
Typical Work
Maintain and implement bookstore policies and procedures in managing day-to-day operations such as ordering, receiving, storing, returning, issuing and accounting for supplies, materials, books and equipment in retail operations;
Assist Bookstore Manager in preparation of annual bookstore budget; analyze, predict and plan departmental budgets; review financial statements for bookstore departments and report to manager with recommendations regarding purchases, expenses, and management of inventory;
With delegated authority, interview and recommend selection of applicants, train new employees, assign and schedule work, act upon leave requests, conduct annual performance evaluations and recommend disciplinary action;
Interview vendor agents and review catalogues for new merchandise; confer with college faculty, direct ordering to meet anticipated needs; develop text book order requirement;
Confer with Bookstore Manager in planning and initiating sales promotions and merchandising; plan and coordinate displays, store arrangements and advertising with seasonal changes, special sales and new merchandise;
Ensure adequate security of facilities, stock and cash in department;
Perform related duties as required.

Desirable Qualifications
High school diploma or GED certificate
AND
Two years of experience in retail selling, merchandising, ordering, inventory control or equivalent. One year of full-time college level coursework with major study in retail merchandising, business, accounting or marketing may be substituted for one year of required work experience.
OR
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
