Definition

Coordinates engineering design, installation, operation and maintenance of media systems and services including digital multimedia devices and their integration into systems.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Responsible for technical planning, design, procurement, construction, and installation of digital multimedia and audio-visual electronic media systems.  Positions require knowledge of Federal Communications Commission regulations and state and local laws relating to closed-circuit telecommunications. 

Positions are distinguished by their responsibility for designing, developing, and implementing telecommunications systems ranging in complexity from closed-circuit television systems to interactive cable distribution systems for multi-building, organization-wide operations, control switching centers, color television production studios, microwave network interconnects, and related distribution systems. Supervises technical personnel and assistants in engineering operations and maintenance.   

Positions have total engineering responsibility for the media engineering and maintenance shop.

Typical Work

Directs and administers all phases of media engineering, maintenance, and pro­duction activities including selection and training of staff, budget development and management, and documentation of services; 

Designs closed-circuit systems involving audio-video, RF switching, processing, transmission, distribution, and reception systems; 

Acts as a technical consultant on planning, design, and installation of tele­communications systems; 

Evaluates, develops, and reviews bid specifications for purchase of electronic media equipment including professional television, professional audio, photographic, RF distribution and electronic test equipment; coordinates all media equipment purchases; 

Maintains comprehensive telecommunications and media equipment files; evaluates new equipment to determine applications and limitations; 

Performs related duties as required; 

Supervises technical personnel in engineering operations and maintenance.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: Federal Communications Commission regulations and state and local laws relating to closed-circuit telecommunications; closed-circuit systems involving design, construction, installation, operation and maintenance of systems; digital projection systems and integrated media devices.  

Ability to: direct all phases of media engineering, maintenance, and production activities; consult with others on planning, design and installation of telecommunications systems; use digital technology, software and computers for production; develop and manage budgets; research, evaluate and recommend purchases of media equipment and software; supervise staff.

Desirable Qualifications

Four years of college or technical school training in radio, tele­vision, electrical, electronics, or related engineering field

AND

four years of responsible experience in electronics work including two years of closed-circuit television experience involving design, construction, installation, operation, and maintenance, and two years of applicable lead or supervisory experience.
