BROADCAST TECHNICIAN SUPERVISOR
Definition
Supervise broadcast technicians in the operation and maintenance of a radio and/or television facility or systems.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Positions in this class are distinguished by responsibility for supervising broadcast technicians and related support personnel in the installation, repair, maintenance, and construction of radio/television broadcast distribution systems and equipment. Incumbents are responsible for selection, discipline and dismissal actions and for the assignment, scheduling, training, and evaluation of subordinate personnel.
Typical Work
Selects, trains, assigns, and supervises broadcast technicians and student employees in construction, installation, maintenance, testing, repair, and operation of radio/television broadcast facilities and equipment;
Directs the setup, technical operation, and maintenance of remote productions and broadcasts;
Designs or supervises the design and development of control rooms, transmitter facilities, closed circuit television and cable distribution systems, control and switching systems, microwave relay systems and network interconnects, video-tape record-playback systems, processing systems, RF switching, demodulation-rebroadcast systems, and related broadcast equipment and systems;
Evaluates equipment specifications and make recommendations for purchase;
Assists in the development of long-range plans;
Provides technical assistance relative to set lighting, equipment usage and limitation, engineering, and general operation of broadcast facilities and equipment;
Maintains an inventory and stock of repair and replacement parts;
Conducts proof of performance tests on broadcast systems and production facilities;
Allocates and schedules studio and control room equipment usage and maintenance;
Performs related duties as required.

Desirable Qualifications
Five years of full-time experience in radio or television broadcast technician work which has included one year of lead/supervisory experience. Possession of a first class Federal Communications Commission radio-telephone operator's license. College or technical school training in radio, television or electrical engineering may be substituted, year-for-year, for up to four years of the required experience.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
