JUVENILE REHABILITATION OFFICER 1
Definition
In a training capacity, provides basic coaching, security, and safety for residents, staff and visitors in a juvenile rehabilitation institution; or, basic night time supervision, safety and security for youth in a juvenile residential facility/unit; or security of youth during local transportation to and from as well as during appointments on or off campus.

Typical Work
Fully participate with in-training assignments as directed;
Provides supervision to youth, with responsibility for their personal conduct, care and therapy;
Acts as role model for youth residents;
Assists with conducting perimeter checks of doors, vehicles, equipment and grounds;
Checks previous shift logs and logs all activities during work shift; prepares unit forms; writes in daily sheets;
Using agency approved methods and techniques and modeling pro-social behavior, serves as back-up to residential units and staff; provides swift and appropriate response between residents or residents and staff; remaining calm and in control during aggressive or crisis situations and intervenes to de-escalate;
Briefs supervisors and relief staff regarding current issues/areas of concern (i.e., passes on pertinent information) in order to be aware of a situation or to take appropriate action; advises youth regarding problems, institution programs, policies, and behavior standards;
Operates communication devices such as two-way radio, telephone, to convey information among personnel and to refer callers to take appropriate action;
Provides night time coverage in a unit; serves as back-up to other staff;
Assists with conducting room and contraband searches; inspects rooms for cleanliness;
Assists with conducting bed checks and hourly security calls;
Assists with monitoring activity, behavior, and movement of youth ensuring the safety and security of facility residents, staff and visitors; models pro-social adaptive behavior and demonstrates good verbal de-escalation techniques;
Assists with conducting searches for absconders;
Assists with transporting youth to appointments and court appearances; may provides supervision of off-site juveniles during transport and appointments/appearances;
Assists with preparation of meals;
Performs general cleaning of office, such as mopping, waxing, stripping floors, window washing, laundry; bathroom cleaning, emptying trash and other as necessary;
Puts away supplies; monitors supply use; inventories and orders cleaning and linen supplies;
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: causes and treatment of juvenile legal system involved young people; human growth and adolescent development; state juvenile justice system; operating principles and treatment philosophy of a juvenile rehabilitation system; interagency procedures; state laws, regulations and administrative codes pertaining to juvenile legal system involved young people determinate sentencing; crisis intervention and processes and techniques of de-escalation of situations; work group supervision and facilitation of youths; management and supervisory theory and practices; case management; community resources; verbal and written communication; report writing; negotiation and mediation techniques; community networking; contract negotiation and writing.
Ability to: apply and implement juvenile rehabilitation system laws, policies, procedures and philosophy; interview and counsel youths; motivate youths and maintain organization; recognize and identify problems and needs of youths; assess crisis and problematic situations; remain calm, take control and de-escalate dangerous situations; gain confidence and trust of youths; use authority constructively; provide individual, group, and family counseling; direct and supervise groups; direct and supervise staff; manage and implement projects and programs; negotiate and write contracts; communicate clearly and effective verbally and in writing; network with groups, agencies and community; represent agency in a professional and positive manner.

Desirable Qualifications
High school graduation or GED equivalent
AND
One year of relevant experience (full-time equivalency) in counseling, criminal justice, education, psychology, sociology, behavioral health, or social service.
Two years of college will substitute for the required one year of experience.
A valid driver’s license is required for these positions.
