VOCATIONAL TRAINING SUPERVISOR
Definition
Plans, supervises, and coordinates vocational training program for residents of the three largest institutions for the developmentally disabled.
Distinguishing Characteristics
This three position class will be used only at Rainier School at Buckley, Lakeland Village, and Fircrest School.
Typical Work
Supervises and coordinates vocational evaluation process for the purpose of identifying clients' age, attitudes, needs, physical disabilities, personality traits, academic achievement, vocational aptitudes, interests, and learning abilities;
Supervises and coordinates the development of work training opportunities for residents within the institution; coordinates development of resident job specifications; coordinates the evaluation of resident work; supervises the work assignments of residents; coordinates the development of resident salary schedules and disbursement of wages;
Supervises and coordinates the efforts of Vocational Counselors and/or Industrial Therapy Assistants and Aides; assigns staff caseloads; develops job performance criteria; completes performance evaluations for subordinate vocational staff; establishes procedural policies and organizes work methods;
Serves as liaison with various community vocational training resources; designs programs to prepare residents for sheltered community work; organizes transportation systems; establishes and coordinates resident referral systems; establishes and maintains evaluation criteria for residents working in community;
Performs other work as required.

Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: vocational training methods and techniques; basic principles of employee supervision; basic principles of program management; sources of vocational information; evaluation and assessment techniques; interviewing techniques; principles of counseling; needs and problems of mentally retarded people; community based resources for the mentally retarded.
Ability to: develop coordinated programs for vocational training and career preparation of the mentally retarded; maintain professional inter disciplinary relationships; establish performance standards and job expectations for resident workers as well as subordinate staff; establish and sustain working relationship with various state, regional, and local public and private community vocational resources.

Desirable Qualifications
A Bachelor's degree involving major study in psychology, sociology, education, or closely allied field.
AND
Three years of experience in vocational or employment counseling, work training, recreation, or occupational therapy, at least one year of which must involve work with developmentally disabled persons.
Additional qualifying experience may be substituted, year for year, for education.
