Definition

Performs a variety of photographic tasks; takes still pictures of medical, scientific and/or other technically difficult subjects such as biochemical gels and anatomical specimens.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Under general direction, performs a variety of technical photographic tasks such as taking and processing digital images, photomicrography and color printing.

Typical Work

Photographs subjects of an unusually fragile nature such as biochemical gels, anatomical specimens and light and pressure-sensitive charts, etc.;

Uses digital SLR cameras (high resolution)and computers to produce photographic images;

Produces color managed digital images from film and digital sources suitable for pre-press and exhibition purposes;

Takes still pictures of art work, rare maps, books, archival specimens and clinical and surgical procedures;

Plans, organizes and prepares photographic materials for public relations and visual aid programs;

Photographs subjects employing less commonly used photographic techniques such as infra-red, ultra-violet and polarized light, including bright field in both black and white and color;

Takes photographs in studio and field using appropriate lighting techniques;

Participates as instructor in employee in-service educational programs;

Performs duties of Photographer 1;

Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: operation, adjustment, and maintenance of press, commercial view, miniature, portrait, motion picture, and other professional cameras; operation of digital SLR cameras; operation of various equipment such as film negative scanners, high resolution flatbed scanners, and digital card readers; methods and techniques to use in obtaining well-composed, clear photographs including handling of fragile or technically difficult subject matter; properties, characteristics, uses, and processing of photographic materials; light, lenses, and photographic optics; types of developers and chemical solutions most effective on various types of film and paper.

Ability to: plan, compose, and produce still photographs and motion pictures with news, public relations, instructional, and evidential value; develop negatives; edit, enhance, retouch, and resize digital images using specialized software and digital image processing computer workstations; produce color managed, digital images from film and digital sources for pre-press and exhibition purposes; make contact and protection prints; meet and work with public.

Desirable Qualifications

Three years of experience in still photography, including one year as a Photographer 1.
