Definition

Receives and transmits messages and information by means of 2 way radio, telephone and teletype.

Typical Work

Receives and transmits snow and pass reports, and information regarding road, weather, road restrictions and avalanche control, forest fire, slash burning and smoke management from and to fixed stations and mobile units;

Transmits work orders to the maintenance crews and equipment operators for emergency or regular maintenance repairs to roads, signs, bridges, lights, signals, radios or mechanical equipment;

Disseminates information relative to the weather, burning permits, forest closures, and road and pass conditions to newspapers, radio stations, television stations, automobile clubs and the general public;

Maintains a log of radio communications sent and received and records all incoming and outgoing telephone calls;

May write over legal, intransit, use fuel and restricted route permits, figure costs and collect payment or write charge tickets;

Maintains records of available emergency personnel and equipment and dispatches as directed for emergency work; maintains records of emergency dispatches and estimated time of arrival;

May schedule aerial detection flights and make needed changes to schedules if weather information warrants it;

May update yearly fire plans, prepare fire reports and fire billings;

May issue burning permits requested by the public and approved by proper personnel and inform public of burning laws and recommendations;

May supervise others;

Performs other work as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: applicable Federal Communications Commission Rules.

Ability to: operate multi channel 2 way radio, teletype; type at 30 w.p.m.; deal tactfully and effectively with individuals; speak and write clearly.

Desirable Qualifications

Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent and one year of experience in work involving public contact or communication such as radio communications, receptionist, switchboard operator, or clerical office work which included dealing with the public.

Note: Minimum typing skill level of 30 words per minute is required for incumbents in this classification.
