Plans, schedules, and assigns the activities for port of entry or field commercial vehicle enforcement programs within the Washington State Patrol.  Supervises staff assigned to programs.

Directs the operation of commercial vehicle enforcement activities in port of entry or field programs; 

Coordinates and standardizes enforcement of established commercial vehicle enforcement policies and regulations; serves as liaison between subordinate personnel and representatives of the industry; 

Reviews subordinates’ work and shift schedules to provide optimum coverage; 

Prepares performance reports and promotional evaluations of commercial vehicle staff; 

Supervises and coordinates decentralized training of commercial vehicle personnel;  

Coordinates commercial vehicle operating requirements and limitations with other state and federal agencies;

Compiles reports on commercial vehicle enforcement activity in program area to keep headquarters advised; reviews and checks reports submitted by subordinates; 

Weighs commercial vehicles with stationary scales to assure compliance with state weight laws; assist commercial vehicle enforcement staff with portable scales; 

Inspects equipment on commercial vehicles through comprehensive, critical item safety inspections to assure compliance with laws governing required and proper condition of equipment; 

Measures commercial vehicles and their loads to determine compliance with length, width, height, and other configuration requirements; 

Inspects commercial vehicles transporting hazardous materials to assure compliance with hazardous materials carrier regulations adopted by the State of Washington; 

Responds to hazardous materials incidents/accidents to assist commercial vehicle hazardous materials specialist at the scene, as requested; 

Operates radiological monitoring devices on radioactive loads, as required by state law; 

Inspects drivers’ documents, operators’ licenses, vehicle licenses, and permits as required by state laws and federal regulations; 

Takes commercial vehicle enforcement action in compliance with the laws, regulations, and administrative codes enforced; 

Issues temporary vehicle licenses and use fuel permits; 

Supervises staff involved in inspection of non-registered tow trucks, fuel tax evasion, Drug Interdiction Assistance Program (DIAP), and covert surveillance of commercial vehicles; 

Provides directions, information, and assistance to the motoring public; renders first aid, as necessary; 

Performs other duties as required.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Two years of experience as a Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officer 2 

A bachelor’s degree in business administration, public administration, or police science may substitute for one year of the required experience.
