Definition

Inspects in-service and repairs of boilers and unfired pressure vessels which may include nuclear vessels and piping systems, in assigned area, to ensure compliance with state laws and regulations.  Inspects the manufacturing, fabrication and alterations of boilers and unfired pressure vessels which may include nuclear fabrication to ensure compliance with state laws and regulations and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Code and National Board Inspection Code (NBIC) as applicable.

Typical Work

May perform internal and external inspections of nuclear vessels and piping systems to ensure compliance with ASME Code; uses Radiography (X-Ray and Gamma Ray), liquid Penetrant (dye check), Magnetic Particle, Ultra-Sonic, and Eddy Current methods in performing nondestructive tests; verifies manufacturers' data report;

Performs annual internal and external inspections of power boilers and biennial inspections of unfired pressure vessels to ensure compliance with state rules, regulations, and ASME Code; issues inspection certificates;

Checks boilers for safety valve operation, proper welding, corrosion, erosion, pitting, or cracking of heads and interiors of steam drums, securing of swash plates, splitting or cracking of tube ends, and blistering, cracking, erosion, and leakage of combustion space; performs hydrostatic tests and checks entire boiler for leakage;

Notifies chief inspector when nuclear vessels and piping systems, and boilers or pressure vessels, fail to meet code or legal requirements; prepares report of defects; prepares reports and correspondence on completed inspections;

Inspects authorized boiler and pressure vessel manufacturing plants for compliance with state and ASME Codes; inspects replacement or installation of new boilers for proper clearances, ladders and runways, exits from boiler room, blow-off tanks, and pressure reducing valves;

Performs other work as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: state laws and regulations and American Society of Mechanical Engineers Code on nuclear vessels and piping systems, boilers and unfired pressure vessels; American Society of Mechanical Engineers Fabrication Code to perform authorized inspections of fabrication; safety factors involved in installation and operation of nuclear vessels, high pressure boilers and unfired pressure vessels, high pressure and exhaust piping, and other powerhouse equipment; steam engineering; boiler making; steam fitting and fluid transmitting systems; stress and strength potentials of metals used in fabrication of boilers and pressure vessels; welding.

Ability to: inspect and recognize causes of malfunctioning in nuclear vessels, high and low pressure systems; develop and maintain satisfactory working relationships with the public; prepare clear, concise, progress and inspection reports.

Legal Requirement(s)

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

At the time of appointment, must meet the qualification requirements for a commission as set forth by the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors and have passed the examination.

Desirable Qualifications

One year of experience as a Pressure Vessel Inspector 1 or equivalent.

AND

Ability to acquire an authorized Inspector commission from the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors.

NOTE: Positions assigned nuclear vessels and piping systems inspections require an authorized Nuclear Inspector commission from the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors.
