Definition

This is the entry level of the series which perform basic safety inspections, under close supervision on elevators and other lifting apparatus to determine and enforce compliance with state law, rules and adopted national codes for elevators and other conveyances.

Typical Work

Upon successful completion of the first year of the in-training plan, may assist, under close supervision, with safety inspections of elevators, escalators, dumbwaiters, belt-type lifts, moving walks and other conveyances with respect to their operation, installation, alteration, repair, maintenance and safety testing; 

Inspects within elevator cars, hoist ways, machine rooms and pits; 

Drafts inspection reports with deficiencies noted to conveyance owners, once reviewed, issues orders requiring discontinuance of use until equipment is made safe; 

During inspections, ensures elevator mechanics and workers are properly licensed;

Performs other work as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:  state elevator statutes rules and adopted national codes for elevator, escalator and other conveyances.

Ability to:  make inspections of new and existing installations and to observe full load, drop and safety tests.

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Desirable Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent

AND

Four years of mechanical/electrical trade background including equivalent trade experience gained in military service;

OR

Completion of the first year of the Labor and Industries Elevator Inspector Training Program.
