Interpret from verbal classroom presentations for deaf students.
Distinguishing Characteristics
This is the entry-level category for the deaf interpreter series. Incumbents will interpret from non-technical lectures and classroom presentations.
Typical Work
Using sign language and mouth expression interpret classroom lectures to deaf students; convey instructor’s intent as well as his spoken word;
Use reverse interpretation, relaying questions and contributions from deaf students back to the instructor; encourage deaf students to use standard signs;
Assist classroom instructor in meeting the needs of deaf students in the classroom; communicate assignment instructions and other information from the instructor to the deaf student;
Provide note-taking material for the students, and assist the classroom instructor in finding hearing note-takers to take notes for the deaf students; see that the deaf students are provided the notes;
Complete a daily interpreter’s log relating all important information about the day’s interpretive events; inform the Coordinator of Interpretive Service of individual student progress or problems; attend interpreter meetings;
Complete daily time sheets and complete a monthly report of interpreting hours for each course worked;
Perform related duties as required.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.
Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.
Desirable Qualifications
High school graduation or general education development test certificates and 6 months of experience interpreting for the deaf using sign language. Experience may be in the home, volunteer or paid.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Examination Requirements
- A job element examination (including written, E & T and oral components) scored on the basis of job related experience, training, skill, ability, and other elements which are established through job analysis.
